DONEGAL BOXING Board President Peter O’Donnell created a piece of history at the IABA’s Annual Convention today.
The Raphoe ABC founder, known the country-wide as Donegal’s Mr Boxing, was elected as part of the IABA’s eight-member Central Council.
In doing so, O’Donnell became the first Donegal Boxing member to be elected onto the Central Council in the 108 history of the IABA.
Anna Moore topped the voting with 215 votes while O’Donnell was next on the list with 214 votes.
Philip Rooney, Larry Durand, Fiona Hennigan, Frank Ward, Gerry Storey and Johnny Carey were also elected.
Donegal boxing received a further fillip when Donegal Town native Paddy Gallagher was elected as the IABA Secretary.
The Convention was hosted at the Broadhaven Hotel in Belmullet, Co. Mayo.
Minister Michael Ring, speaking in advance of the occasion, hailed the contribution of boxing to Irish sport.
He said: “It’s a great honour for Belmullet to host the IABA National Boxing Convention.
“The IABA has a proud history and everyone involved in the sport in Ireland can look back over the last 108 years with an enormous sense of pride, particularly in relation to our Olympic successes.
“Hopefully, there will be more to come in Tokyo next year.”
