PAUL HEGARTY HAS TURNED down the chance to take the Derry City manager’s position on a permanent basis, the club has confirmed.
The Ballindrait man stepped into the job in a caretaker capacity in mid-September, following the departure of Peter Hutton following a 2-0 FAI Cup replay loss at Cork City.
Hegarty’s sole task was to help Derry to retain their Premier Division status.
Since Hegarty returned to the Brandywell at the end of July as Hutton’s assistant, Derry saw an upturn in their fortunes and finished the season in seventh position, six points above Limerick FC, who will play Finn Harps in the promotion-relegation play-off.
Hegarty was seen as the forerunner to take the job, but this evening the club confirmed that Hegarty – who was offered the post – had declined their advances.
The club’s official Twitter account tweeted: “@derrycityfc can confirm that caretaker manager Paul Hegarty has declined to take the manager’s job because of personal reasons.”
Derry City are expected to issue a statement on the matter.
