THE KILCAR CONNECTION certainly played its part an University of Ulster Jordanstown overcame St Mary’s University College this afternoon.
With Martin McHugh part of the UUJ management team, his clubmate Patrick McBrearty, who was named corner-forward, and son Ryan at wing-back played their part in the 0-14 to 1-6 Independent Sigerson Cup quarter-final victory in the sunshine at the Jordanstown campus.
McBrearty scored two frees and an exquisite sideline ball in the first half to establish a 0-7 to 0-2, wind-assisted, interval advantage for UUJ.
Down’s Jerome Johnston grabbed a goal for St Mary’s on 50 minutes and when Kevin McKernan pointed soon afterwards, UUJ’s lead was down to 0-9 to 1-4.
However, UUJ saw it out with McBrearty scoring a point from a free and another from play – making his personal haul five for the day – to seal a semi-final spot next Friday for the competition hosts.
