SHAY GIVEN HAS confirmed his retirement from international football this evening.
The Liffordman took to Twitter to announce that, after winning 134 caps for the Republic of Ireland, he was hanging up his international gloves.
Given was handed his debut for Ireland against Russia in 1996 by Mick McCarthy and he played at the World Cup in 2002 and at Euro 2012.
Given had retired from international football after Euro 2012, but in September 2014 he played against Oman in a 2-0 friendly win after being coaxed back.
[adrotate group=”38″]Given soon became the first choice goalkeeper, but he picked up a knee injury last October during the famous 1-0 win over Germany that reignited Ireland’s hopes of making it to France.
His injury woes meant that he had a watching brief at Euro 2016 with Darren Randolph playing in goal for the games against Sweden, Belgium, Italy and France.
“I’m one of the very lucky ones who got to wear the jersey for his country and wore the badge with pride 134 times,” Given said in his statement.
“But now it’s time to hang up the gloves and move from the onion bag to the terraces’, where I’ll be shouting the lads on as one of Ireland’s biggest fans.”
