It’s not often you get to represent your country in the European finals come home with a bronze medal and a few weeks later win the Presidents Prize in your local golf club.
But that’s exactly what Oisin Merritt did at the weekend.
Oisin who has become a fan of stepping on to the podium this year put in a fantastic performance to card 40 points to claim his first major in his home club of Ballybofey and Stranorlar Golf Club.
In his acceptance speech, Oisin told of how it was only four years ago when he came up for a walk around the course with Liam O’Neill, was made feel so welcome, fell in love with the game and the rest is history.
President Joe Blee was delighted to see a young man like Oisin do so well at the game in a short space of time.
Joe also thanked everyone that turned out to play on the day and to the large crowd who showed up for the prize giving and made it a very very special night for him.
Junior President’s Day
President Joe was back on duty on Monday past for Presidents Junior Prize and what a turnout there was for that.
The winner was actually the same young man who won Captains Junior Prize a few weeks back. Well done to Barry McMenamin jnr on winning the double this year.
Congratulations also to Sally Carr on winning the Presidents Prize for girls. Sally is an upcoming star in ladies golf. Well done to all the boys and girls who took part.
Well done to those who made the day a great success namely Lady Captain Josephine Stewart. Charlie Quinn and John Bradley.
A special thanks to all the parents for giving their time to bringing the children and supporting them in their golfing adventure. N
Teams
The big team event in all of Ulster this weekend will be the match between two Donegal Clubs, Ballybofey and Stranorlar GC and Rosapenna in the All Ireland Mixed Foursomes.
Both teams make the journey to Massereene Glolf Club on Saturday 25th August to do duel for the title of Ulster Champions who in turn will progress into the All Ireland Finals.
Best of Luck to Margaret, Terry and team. Your support on the day will be more than welcome. Tee time-2pm
On the same day, the B&S Donegal Junior scratch team guided by Freddie Wilson are also in action in Murvagh.
Fred has had to reshuffle his team as a number of them are on the Mixed Team but no doubt there is plenty of talent for him to select from.
B&S Minor League Team take on Buncrana Golf Club in the first leg of the semi final.
The team have done very well this year and hopefully under the stewardship of John Patton will advance to the final against Otway Golf Club.
