LETTERKENNY ABC man Michael O’Donnell advanced to the quarter-finals of the National Junior Cadet Championships in Dublin this afternoon.
O’Donnell overcame Monivea’s David Briggs on a majority decision in a preliminary round bout at 52kgs today, firing the Letterkenny man into next week’s quarter-finals.
O’Donnell just had the edge today at the National Stadium and will be joined next week in Dublin by Letterkenny ABC colleague Paddy McShane, who fights in a 36kgs semi next Saturday.
One minute’s silence, tolled in and out by the bell at ringside, was observed in memory of Muhammad Ali, the great former heavyweight champion who passed away on Friday night in America.
Another notable winner in Dublin today was Aodhán Byrne from the Kilcullen club in Kildare. Byrne, fighting at 38.5kgs, overcame Titans Michael Conroy on a split decision to move into the quarter-finals.
His mother is Sinead Long, a native of Carrickmagrath in Ballybofey.
