RACHEL CHARLES has been about the boxing rings of California long enough now that she can separate the wheat from the chaff in an instant.
Charles is the VP of Operations and Publicity with Sheer Sports Management and has counts Wayne McCullough among the boxers she’s worked with since moving from Birmingham in 1990.
Jason Quigley is a blue chip at Sheer’s table right now. In March, ‘El Animal’ will fight for his first professional boxing title when he faces Glen Tapia for the vacant NABF Middleweight title at the Fantasy Springs Resort in Indio – as revealed last night by Donegal Sport Hub.
Quigley is unbeaten in 12 pro fights and is taking his first steps into title territory in his next assignment.
It’s no surprise for Charles that Quigley is contesting titles and also headlining for the first time as part of the first Golden Boy Boxing On ESPN series.
“We are tremendously happy and proud that Jason is getting his chance to fight for his first title,” she says.
“And headlining on the prestigious ESPN – talk about no pressure!
“His journey to this point has been incredible. He’s earned his shot and we couldn’t be happier. It’s all hands on deck from now until March 23rd.
“We’re expecting a ton of Irish to come from far and wide to support him.
“It’s going to be a terrific night and he will undoubtedly put on a masterclass of his determination, athleticism and spirit.”
[adrotate group=”46″]When Quigley boxed with the LA Matadors in the World Series of Boxing and defeated Vitali Bandarenka and Troy Trevor O’Meley, he caught the eye of Sheer Sports’ Director of Scouting, Courage Tshabalala, a former heavyweight contender.
Tshabalala discussed Quigley with Charles and Ken Sheer – whose team is completed by Lyle Green – and a meeting was arranged, via Manny Robles (Quigley’s current trainer who trained him in his LA Matador days), with the boxer and his father, Conor.
“We were impressed by Jason in the ring but blown away with Jason outside of the ring,” says Charles.
[adrotate group=”53”]In April 2014, Quigley signed a five-year deal with Golden Boy Promotions and moved to Los Angeles to link up with the stable of boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya.
After a clean sweep of wins in his opening 12 contests, Quigley will aim to go 13-0 when he takes on the 23-3 Tapia and a win would see the Ballybofey man enter the IBF rankings.
