A NEW trainer for the Donegal senior football team has been appointed ahead of the 2017 season.
Richard Thornton, a native of Coalisland, was on the Tyrone panel that won an All-Ireland Under-21 title in 2001 and was a member of the Red Hand senior squad that won the League in 2002.

This season, Thornton trained Loup, who were beaten by Slaughtneil in the Derry SFC final and has now been recruited by the Donegal manager, Rory Gallagher.
[adrotate group=”38″]Gallagher was recently appointed for a new three-year term with the option of a fourth year at the end of that. He has now shaken up his backroom staff with the addition of Thornton, who has taken the place of Jack Cooney.
A teacher at St Joseph’s in his native Coalisland, Thornton has managed his home club, most recently in 2015, and was also at the helm of the Tyrone Vocational School squad.
Thornton replaces Cooney with the Westmeath man’s role with Donegal discontinuing after he had served two years in the position.
