Finn Valley hammer thrower Dempsey McGuigan broke the 70-metre barrier overnight in America.
McGuigan set a new Donegal record at the Mt Sac Relay meeting in Walnut, California.
McGuigan reached out to a new personal best of 70.55m – an important milestone in his developing career.
Competing for his US alma mater, Mississippi University, at this prestigious meet – the same location in which Olympian Declan Hegarty set the Irish record back in the eighties (77.80), McGuigan hit new heights.
He now ranks 8th in the Irish all time ranking list.
As Ireland top hammer thrower McGuigan will again represent Ireland in the European Cup in Finland June.
