KELLY MCGRORY SET a new Donegal record on her way to winning silver at the National Senior Championships.
By Chris McNulty at Morton Stadium
McGrory came second in the women’s 400m hurdles in Santry after a fine run of 60.44 seconds.
McGrory has returned to action after a couple of troubled years with injury.
“I’m absolutely delighted,” McGrory beamed at the finish line.
“It’s brilliant to be back. I was feeling the hamstring a bit in the warm-up and I was getting nervous, but it was probably more in my head.”
The Tir Chonaill AC woman recently helped Ireland set a new national record in the mixed 4x400m relay at the European Games in Minsk.
McGrory won gold in the 2016 National Senior Championship, but was beset by a variety of ailments and set-backs thereafter.
But the Laghey native didn’t give up and her 60.44 seconds today is a new Donegal best in the event.
The previous mark of 60.59 seconds was set by Arlene Crossan in Oordegem, Belgium three years ago.
McGrory said: “I’m delighted to be down here competing and performing.
“If I wrote this off as my last competition I’d be over the moon with my season.”
