ADRIENNE Gallen of Lifford-Strabane AC set a new Donegal senior women’s hammer record to win bronze on the first day of action at the Irish Life Health National Athletics Championships.
At Morton Stadium, Santry Gallen reached out to a best of 51.23m, landing at the new best marker on her third attempt.
At the end of May, Gallen went past 50m for the first time, going to 50.42m
Swinford AC’s Michaela Walsh won gold with a massive 62.64m throw with the silver taken by Bandon AC”s Nicola Tuthill’s 61.55m.
Gallen’s club colleague Brendan O’Donnell, who was the defending champion, earned silver in the senior men’s hammer event.
O’Donnell had a best throw of 61.72m with the gold won by Sean Mockler’s 67.18.
Tir Chonaill AC’s Kelly McGrory eased through her 400m hurdles heat and can be expected to be a real challenger in tomorrow’s final.
McGrory recently set a new Donegal record in the 400m hurdles and won her heat in 1:02.63.
