NAOMH CONAILL GOT the points from their home fixture against St Eunan’s this afternoon in the All-County Football League Division 1.
Naomh Conaill 1-10 St Eunan’s 1-5
The home team were comfortable winners in the end, having gone it at half-time, where they played against a sizeable wind initially, with a 1-2 to 0-4 advantage and in the second half used the elements to their advantage to take the points.
Dermot Molloy’s first half goal meant Naomh Conaill were right in the mix and at one stage in the second it looked as though they were going to run away with it. However, a goal five minutes from time from Cillian Morrison and then a point from substitute Conor ‘Duck’ O’Donnell brought Maxi Curran’s team back to just four down, 1-9 to 1-5.
But St Eunan’s were chasing at that stage and when Eoin Waide, on the break, scored his second point of the day on the break in injury time it meant a home win for the Glenties team.
Molloy’s goal came on just eight minutes when he dispossessed St Eunan’s centre-back Conor O’Donnell, who had just got possession from goalkeeper Blake Forkan, to smash into the empty net.
That made the score 1-1 to 0-11 and Waide might’ve added a second goal on 15 minutes when he got in and blazed just over for a point.
St Eunan’s, with the wind, only got their first point when Jamie Doherty was on the mark on 18 minutes and by the break were just one down, with Ross Wherity, Conor Gibbons and Rory Kavanagh scoring.
Naomh Conaill were much the better team in the second half and between the 30th and 50th minute outscored their guests by seven points to none and had their chances for a second goal.
John O’Malley, Brendan McDyer, two from Molloy, a Logan Quinn brace and Ethan O’Donnell were the point scorers.
Quinn also shot into the side-netting when going for goal and then also was pickpocketed in the St Eunan’s square when the ball came down off the upright as Kieran Gallagher fisted for a point.
Morrison, the St Eunan’s substitute, did net at the other end on 52 minutes when he slotted home a rebound after Stephen McGrath had saved from Darragh Mulgrew.
