Mulroy Academy hosted Swilly Rovers to an entertaining first game of the season on Monday.

Mulroy were on the attack straight away from the first whistle, testing the Swilly defence. Swilly held strong with Caoimhne Heron testing Swilly’s Alannah McFadden in goal.
Lauren Carr stood strong in the centre of the field and dominated majority of play for the first half.
Swilly stood strong, challenging for every 50/50 ball and pressing Thea Duffy on the right side.
24 minutes into the first half, Caoimhne Herron slipped the ball into the bottom right hand corner of Swilly’s goal, just out of reach from the tips of McFadden’s fingers, making it 1-0 to Mulroy.
Just four minutes later and Lauren McBride battled her way through a tight Swilly defence to join Caoimhne on the score board for a 2-0 lead.
Mulroy conceded a risky freekick just outside the 18, Danielle Hynes stepped up to the plate to strike a brilliant shot but was denied by Mulroy’s captain, Clare Friel in goal.
Late in the first half Lauren McBride added to Mulroy’s lead with another great goal, leaving Swilly trailing 3-0.
Then, Keri Sweeney made a break for the goal, taking on McFadden. After Kerri’s first shot being blocked by the Swilly keeper Kerri quickly took the rebound and volleyed the ball into the back of the net.
[adrotate group=”46″]Just before the half time whistle Lauren McBride attempted her third goal of the night but was denied by a super dive from Swilly’s Mc Fadden.
Kerri Sweeney showed great skill taking on multiple defenders to successfully slot away her second goal of the night making it 5-0.
Swilly came back fighting and pressed the Mulroy girls in defence and showing no signs of letting up.
As Swilly pressured Mulroy’s back line, Megan McGee competed in a 50/50 tackle inside the box of the home side to give away a penalty. Alannah McFadden stepped up to the spot and without hesitation slotted away a fine penalty to finish the game off. Great team performance by both sides. Player of the Game was Kerri Sweeney
