Milford United enter this week’s clash with Kilmacrennan Celtic hoping to add another three points on the board and bridge the gap to leaders Kildrum Tigers.
Milford have been in a rich vein of form of late. Winning three of their last four league games and scoring quite a few goals on the way.
The side have enjoyed a fairly successful season to date. Sitting second in the table and winning six out of the nine league games that they’ve played in total.
Their league position shows a big improvement from last year where Milford finished in eighth place. The Milford men have made Moyle View Park a fortress, only losing once at home, and that was against leaders Kildrum.
Milford will know that Sunday’s clash with their local rivals will be far from easy. Kilmacrennan have a host of young talented players in their ranks and will be hoping to avenge their 2-0 loss to Milford earlier in the season.
Milford manager Sean Sandilands is happy with how his side have progressed so far this season. “The boys have all worked hard all year and I can’t fault them one bit. The commitment they’ve shown has been brilliant, they deserve to be where they are,” Sandilands said.
Despite Milford sitting in second place in the league the side are taking things one game at a time. “We’ll just look to get the best result we can against Kilmacrennan and then just kick on from there. We’ll always just be focusing on the next game,” the Milford manager added.
Gary Merritt and Joey Cullen will be welcomed back to the side this week having both missed a few games recently. “Having Gary and joey back is a massive boost. But the boys have been brilliant so far and although they’re both really big additions to bring back to the squad, it’s important we continue to work hard,” Sandilands admitted.
Sandilands has a strong history with Kilamcrennan, having previously managed the club and has also served as chairman. “It will be a bit more tense than most games. At the end of the day all I want is for Milford to come home with the three points. I’m sure there will be a bit of banter beforehand and afterwards, I’m looking forward to the game,” Sandilands concluded.
The local derby will take place at the Flag Pole field Kimacrennan at 2 ‘o clock on Sunday. Patrick Martin will be the referee in what looks to be a crucial encounter between the sides.
