A Donegal boxing team had the upper hand over a Sligo-Leitrim selection yesterday evening.
Convoy ABC hosted the tournament at St Mary’s Hall and the local crew came out on top, winning eight bouts to two.
Raymond McNamee made his return to competitive action on his local canvas with a win over Mark Scanlon. McNamee is a former Donegal county minor footballer and is back in tow with Convoy ABC these days.
McNamee impressed to take the clean sweep of verdicts from the judges at ringside.
His brother, Bryan, is a former two-times Irish champion and he too was victorious, taking the unanimous decision against Tom Myers in a welterweight bout.
Double Irish Defence Forces champion Lee Boyd was another of the natives to claim a win. Boyd was involved in a cracking brawl with the highly-touted Jordan Myers, with Boyd taking a split decision win, to the delight of Donegal coach and Convoy ABC head coach Dominic McCafferty.
Raphoe ABC’s Liam Crawford disposed of David Sweeney and Clonmany lad Adam McDaid had the measure of Sean Reilly. Letterkenny’s Cormac Logue edged out Jordan McGovern with Carrigart’s Barry Donnelly winning a middleweight meeting with Madsola Nodulova.
Raphoe’s Danny Buchanan is in red-hot form these days and the Lifford man defeated Dean McMorrow to record his second win in seven days in the county vest.
Al Morris, the National Secretary, was MC for the tournament, with proceeds in aid of St Mary’s Hall, Convoy.
Donegal’s boxing clubs are reminded that there is a County Board meeting tomorrow evening at 8.30pm in the Letterkenny ABC gym.
The Donegal Opens take place this Saturday and Sunday in the Carndonagh ABC gym, with two days of big action anticipated.
