QPS ADVANCED to the final of the Charlie O’Donnell Cup final after overcoming Clonmany Shamrock’s in a tense semi-final at the School Field in Muff yesterday.
QPS 2 Clonmany Shamrocks 1
Denim McLaughlin scored twice in the second half, with his winner coming from a penalty, after Jason Devlin had put Clonmany in front.
Brian Bell’s ‘Point’ began well and Oisin McColgan had a 25-yard effort well saved by Patrick Harkin in the Shamrocks goal.
Clonmany replied and from a Mark McLaughlin corner Jason Devlin had a near post header cleared by Oisin McCool.
On 21 minutes a Stephen Grant cross caused all sorts of confusion before Philip Devlin made an excellent clearance while Clonmany’s Mark McLaughlin had a free kick well saved by Jordan McLaughlin.
Clonmany took the lead on 34 minutes when with the point on the attack Karl Donnelly’s touch was heavy and Patrick Harkin’s long clearance released Jason Devlin who finished low to the corner from 15 yards.
They almost added a second on the stroke of half time when a Paul Mclaughlin free from half way found Paddy Doherty in behind the home defence but his header was superbly saved by McLaughlin.
QPS began the second period the better and got back on terms on 52 minutes when good work by Raymond Buchanan on the right saw his cross headed to the top corner by Denim McLaughlin despite Harkin getting a hand to it.
On 64 minutes Buchanan cut inside a defender and fired narrowly over from 25 yards. Buchanan saw a free kick parried by Harkin to Mclaughlin but his effort was blocked by two defenders.
The QPS pressure paid off on 74 minutes when they were awarded a penalty for hand ball and McLaughlin blasted low to the keeper’s left.
Clonmany tried to respond but the closest they came was on 87 minutes when a corner broke to Liam Hirrell but from point blank range his effort was brilliantly saved by McLaughlin.
