BRETT MCGINTY WILL make the step up to senior level this winter upon his return from the World Youth Championships.
McGinty is part of a nine-man Irish team that will take on the world’s best youth boxers next month in Russia.
The St Johnston man, who has just turned 18, will be looking to make a mark in senior boxing for the first time with the Oakleaf ABC welterweight entering the Ulster and Irish seniors.
“I’ve a busy year ahead because I’m doing the Leaving Cert as well, but I’d like to make my mark in the seniors,” the Deele College student said.
[adrotate group=”85″]“It has opened up a bit for the younger age group. We were chatting about that this week, how open most of the weights are. Obviously you still have a lot of the top guys there but as far as chances go, it’s a big, big year for us all.”
McGinty and his Irish team-mates begin a second training camp tomorrow. Having just finished one camp at the National Stadium in Dublin, they go into cap at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown tomorrow, where they will train and spar with boxers from Ulster, England and Scotland.
They will go into camp with Russia and Cuba in Moscow from November 3 to 14 and will move onto St Petersburg for the Championships.
“The boys had a great training camp in Dublin and they’re ready for Belfast now. They’ll see plenty of action at the University of Ulster in the build up to the World Youth Championships,” said Irish coach Billy McClean, who will be joined in the Irish corner by John Conlan.
