BRETT MCGINTY OVERCAME 2012 European Champion Jordan Myers in a National Under-18 quarter-final in Dublin this afternoon.
McGinty has just returned from a useful trip to America, where he defeated Deonte Washington last Saturday night, and the St Johnston man has returned with the bit between his teeth in search of Irish title number 7.
Myers is no slouch having won a European Schoolboys gold in 2013. The Sligo man and McGinty have history.
In January, it was Myers who McGinty defeated at a show hosted by McGinty’s Oakleaf ABC in Derry’s Maldron Hotel.
This afternoon, McGinty stood tall for a rugged win over the Sligo City ABC puncher.
The 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games silver medalist McGinty took the unanimous decision from the ringside judges.
The win fires him into a semi-final, where he’ll meet Portlaoise’s Michael Nevin next weekend.
There was no joy for Odhrán MacRuairi from Dungloe, who was beaten 3-0 by Ryston’s Scott O’Connor in a preliminary round at 52kgs and Dungloe’s Kevin McMonagle was beaten 3-0 by Dublin Docklands’ Nathan May at 56kgs.
That defeat for McMonagle means it’s May who advances to a quarter-final with the other McMonagle twin, Mark, next weekend.
Letterkenny ABC’s Paddy McConigley was edged by St Mary’s Daingean’s Brian Kennedy in a heavyweight quarter-final.
McGinty and Mark McMonagle will be joined in quarter-final action next weekend by Dungloe’s Matthew McCole – a recently-crowned Ulster 9 Counties champion – who fights St Paul’s Waterford’s Andy McDonagh at 60kgs.
