The Donegal Junior League enter their Oscar Traynor cup tie with the Inishowen Football League knowing nothing other than a two goal victory will give them a chance to progress to the next round.
When the sides last met, Inishowen proved too strong for their fellow county men with Kieran McDaid and Benny McLaughlin grabbing the goals.
Not much football has been played since that game on the 9th of December. The winter break as well as the poor weather conditions from the last few weeks have taken their tolls.
Donegal know that this is their last chance to stay in the tournament. Striker Ciaran McGeady admits, it’s his side that are facing an up-hill battle on Saturday. “Yeah of course we need to score to go through to the next stage, but also we can’t concede because if we do we’ll be left with a mountain to climb. We’ll try and keep it tight in the first half, maybe nick a goal and we’ll be in with a great chance then,” he said.
The lack of football in recent weeks may not make for the highest standard of matches, but McGeady knows that his side will have to get off to a good start, “The last time we played them we started slow and Inishowen were 2-0 up within 20 minutes, we can’t let that happen again. We need to press them and stop them playing the type of football they’re capable of. Inishowen do play very good football and if you give them time and space they will punish you,” he added.
McGeady represented the Donegal League last year too and hopes to feature with the squad many more times over the course of his career. “It’s a great honour to be chosen to represent your league and your club, I enjoy every minute of it. Doesn’t make a difference whether I’m playing with Glenea or Donegal I’ll go out and try to give 100% all the time. Hopefully we end up on the right side of result at the weekend.”
Both teams will batter hammer and tong to earn a spot in the next round. But Donegal will enter the game as the underdogs considering how the first leg went. The game kicks off at 6:30 Saturday evening in Killygordon.
