Ciara McGarvey netted the equaliser for Donegal ten minutes from time.
The Kilmacrennan Celtic midfielder struck to secure a historic point for the Donegal side in their first season competing at this grade.
After some near misses and close encounters, they bagged that precious point in the Midlands thanks to McGarvey’s cracking strike.
Athlone led through a deflected effort just before the half-hour.
Bronagh Gallagher fired narrowly wide with a great chance to draw level while Helena McGee’s superb delivery was headed just over by Meghan Masterson
They did get on target when McGarvey struck gold.
And Aoife Kelly struck a post in the dying minutes of the tie, while Ciara McElwaine’s last-gasp effort was hooked off the goal-line.
