ST MICHAEL’S BROUGHT AN end to Gaoth Dobhair’s unbeaten League run last night at The Bridge.
St. Michael’s 3-8 Gaoth Dobhair 0-11
By Moses Alcorn
A sterling performance from Colm McFadden was at the heart of the home side’s efforts and he finished with a tally of 2-3.
The match also saw the return to action of Daniel McLaughlin following a long injury layoff and, overall, this was a good team performance from the Bridgemen.
[adrotate group=”31″]Gaoth Dobair took the lead with a point from Kevin Cassidy and St. Michael’s were guilty of some wayward shooting early on posting a number of wides, before Christy Toye opened their account with a point from a free kick.
Keelan McGee added a fine point to put the home side ahead, however a point from Gavin McBride brought the sides level.
Then came the turning point in the first half when the evergreen Brian McLaughlin scored a goal after getting on the end of a fine move involving Toye and Liam Paul Ferry.
[adrotate group=”68″]McLaughlin almost repeated the feat within minutes but he was denied by Christopher Sweeney.
Further points from Toye, Michael Cannon and McFadden put the home side further ahead.
Gaoth Dobhair tried hard but were also guilty of a number of wides and their only other score of the game came from a McBride free; leaving the half time score St. Michael’s 1-5 Gweedore 0-3.
[adrotate group=”55″]In a heated start to the second half Gaoth Dobhair got back into the match spurred on by a buoyant travelling support and points from Cassidy, Daire Ó Baoill, McBride, and Michael Carroll left the minimum between the sides.
The visitors will rue chances to tie up the point at this stage and they were made to pay when Michael Cannon knocked over a point and then a goal from McFadden saw the home side pull away as they finished stronger.
[adrotate group=”54″]When McFadden tucked away a penalty after he was fouled in the square, it secured an important victory for St. Michael’s who ran out comfortable winners in the end.
