PADDY MCCONIGLEY’S Kilkenny side were defeated 1-12 to 0-8 by Mayo in the All-Ireland JFC semi-final this afternoon in Tullamore.
The former Fanad Gaels clubman (pictured above in action against Kerry Ryan of Aodh Ruadh) has been part of the Kilkenny set-up since making the move to Castlecomer with his wife Siobhan late last year. McConigley won the 2007 National Football League Division One title with Brian McIver’s Donegal.
Mayo made a blistering start to the semi-final at O’Connor Park, racking up 1-5 before Kilkenny got out of the blocks. Damien McGing from Ballintubber was a first half goalscorer and the Connacht side were 1-6 to 0-4 up at the break.
Kilkenny did show some fighting spirit in the second half but the closest they managed to get was back to within four points when McConigley scored the first point after half-time. But three second half points from Ronan Malee helped Mayo to ease home.
Kerry won the other semi-final thanks to a 3-13 to 2-9 win over Wexford at Fraher Field in Waterford.
