JAMIE LEE MCBRIDE was the star of the show for Downings against Letterkenny Gaels in the quarter-final of the Junior A Championship.
Downings 2-9Â Letterkenny Gaels 1-7
The Letterkenny men started brightly with two early points from Gaels talisman Conor Mc Brearty in the opening minutes but these were cancelled out by his opposite number Garry McBride in the following minutes.
Both teams traded points after this but the turning point came on the 20th minute when McBride found the back of the Gaels net leaving three between the sides. The Downings men went on to score another two points before the break.
Half time score: Downings 1-6 Letterkenny Gaels 0-4
Downings opened the second half as they had finished the first with a quick fire point just after the ball was thrown in before McBrearty for the Gaels pointed again.
The Letterkenny men had a goal disallowed when referee Shane Toolan gave Downings a free out after Conor Mc Brearty was deemed to have fouled the Downings full back. Once again both teams traded points but the game was over as a contest when the lively Jamie Lee McBride rattled the back of Shane Graham’s net.
In the end Championship pedigree and hunger was the difference between the sides and Downings now progress to the Junior A Championship Semi Finals where they will play the winners of Muff and Red Hughs.
