DUNGLOE’S Matthew McCole advanced to the semi-finals of the the National Under-22 Championships this afternoon.
McCole overcame Joseph Kelly from St Canice’s in Derry on a unanimous decision at the National Stadium.
McCole now goes into the 64kgs semi-finals, which will be down for decision next Saturday.
There was disappointment for Letterkenny ABC welter Patrick McConigley, who lost out in a quarter-final to St Mary’s Dublin puncher John Maughan on a unanimous decision.
There was defeat, also, in the Irish Novice quarter-final for Letterkenny’s Noel Hegarty, who was stopped in the second round of his meeting at 85kgs with Loughshore’s Niall O’Hagan.
In all, nine Donegal boxers have entered the Under-22 and Novice Championships.
Carrigart’s Maeve McCarron has a walkover win at 81+kgs in the Under-22s.
The Moran brothers, Darryl and Leigh, from Illies Golden Gloves will be looking to pack a punch in the Under-22s with Darryl to compete at 49kgs and Leigh taking to the ring at 52kgs next weekend.
Twin Towns ABC’s Ciara Anderson has a straight final in the Under-22s at 48kgs and will be up against St Anne’s Shannon Sweeney next Saturday.
In the Male Novice’s, Twin Towns’ Shane McGinty (91kgs) will be in action next week while in the Female Novice’s, Twin Towns woman Jackie Gillespie takes on Togher’s Nycole Hayes in the 50kgs decider.
53 bouts were completed over the last 24 hours at the home of Irish boxing with 14 Novice bouts finishing inside the distance.
