Aaron Doherty popped up with a point in added time to fire Coláiste na Carraige to victory in today’s Danske Bank Markey Cup semi-final against Keady at Garvaghey.
Colaiste na Carraige 1-6 St Patrick’s, Keady 0-8
The south-west Donegal nursery had led much of the way thanks to Shane Gillespie’s goal in the first half, but St Patrick’s came roaring back in the second half.
The teams were level as Shane McKeever and Paul Green pointed, but Doherty stepped up to win it for the Carrick students, who will play Coláiste Cholmcille from Ballyshannon in an all-Donegal final next week.
Gillespie bagged a goal in the 12th minute and the Kilcar-Naomh Columba combination were in front.
An early 1-2, with Doherty and Lanty Molloy scoring the points, opened the contest well, but the Carrick men wouldn’t score for the remainder of the first half.
Keady were within a point, 1-2 to 0-4, at half-time and they could have been ahead, but Jim Short hit the crossbar.
Doherty extended the lead, but Piaras Lennon’s brace leveled it up.
When Doherty and Gillespie struck points, it looked to be Coláiste na Carraige’s day – and so it was, but not before some late panic as they eventually steered over the line via Doherty’s precious point.
