Letterkenny Institute of Technology secured the Electric Ireland Trench Cup on Saturday with a 0-15 to 2-07 victory over Dundalk Institute of Technology at Mallow GAA Sports Complex in Cork.
LyIT 0-15 DkIT 2-07
Letterkenny started at pedestrian pace and allowed Dundalk to take a 1-2 to 0-0 lead after five minutes.
However, the Donegal side sprung into life midway through the first half and responded with three well-earned points of their own.
With a two-point advantage just before the interval, Dundalk stretched their lead to five points as they play with a strong wind in their favour.
However, LyIT didn’t yield that easily hitting back with another impressive quirk-fire three points to narrow the game at the break.
In the second period, both sides failed to get their own game going but it was DkIT that took the initiative, striking for another four points.
The County Louth side hammered home another goal through Eunan Walsh before unlocking the Letterkenny defence again with a solid point – LyIT found themselves with it all to do.
With 15 minutes to go, following a flurry of scores from LyIT that reduced it to a three-point game, Letterkenny took real charge.
Scoring six points in the final third of the game and LyIT took control for the first time, controlling the pace of the final to secure an impressive comeback and win the Trench Cup.
