Letterkenny Golf Club welcomed transition year students from Loreto Secondary School, Letterkenny to take part in their Get into Golf Come & Try Event at the Club recently.
Fun was the order of the day, with Michael McNulty, Development Officer from the Confederation of Golf in Ireland (CGI) delivered an excellent programme of activities to introduce the 16 participants to the basic skills of golf, such as putting, chipping and pitching and PGA Professional, Seamus McMonagle was on hand to demonstrate some driving skills.
Ably assisted by Deirdre O’Toole, Donegal Sports Partnership (DSP) and Ulster ILGU Junior Development Committee and Maura Cavanagh, Lady Captain, Letterkenny Golf Club and her volunteers along with Loreto staff members BrÃd Mulhern and Siobhan McGarry ensured that each participant was well looked after on the day.
The students then had an opportunity to play a few holes on the course followed by some lunch and a questions and answers session with the Lady Captain and the Club Members. The girls were commended by the Lady Captain, Maura ‘on their enthusiasm and willingness to learn especially as they were officially finished school and if they continued as they did today would make fine golfers in the future’.
This is the third year of this unique partnership between the Loreto Secondary School, Letterkenny and Letterkenny Golf Club, Ladies Branch which was spearheaded by teacher and golfer, Brid Mulhern and Principal, Nora Friel and supported by Donegal Sports Partnership (DSP) and Sport Irelands Women in Sport Programme along with Confederation of Golf in Ireland.
Great credit going to Letterkenny Golf Club’s Lady Captain, Maura and her members for playing key roles in supporting the delivery of this programme to the girls and in-turn promoting golfing opportunities within their club.
A follow-on programme of activities is available for the students interested in taking part in further coaching lessons with PGA Professional, Seamus McMonagle and the Junior Programmes at Letterkenny Golf Club.
