A BIG CROWD of local cyclists braved the elements this morning to embark on the ‘Share The Road Cycle’, an event designed to raise awareness for cyclists’ safety.
The group left the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny for a 30km cycle.
Local endurance athlete Sean McFadden, mountaineer Jason Black and Irish Athletics Team Manager Patsy McGonagle were among the speakers before the cyclists set off on their trip.
McFadden was caught up in a recent accident when four cyclists were hurt after being struck from behind by a car just outside Kilmacrennan.
Two of the injured riders spent a night in Letterkenny General Hospital, but were not seriously hurt.
However, the incident served to highlight the dangers posed for cyclists and this morning’s event is designed to heighten awareness of the safety aspect for cyclists and motorists.
The money raised from the event will go towards stickers and signs for cars which will raise awareness for the safety of cyclists.
TD Joe McHugh and Brian O’Donnell, the Donegal County Council Road Safety Officer, were also in attendance this morning.
