Pauric Ward says it’s ‘about time’ Naomh Columba challenged for honours in the Intermediate Championship.
The fires have begun to burn in Glen again of late and the club has been experience a real resurgence in recent years.
A club that contested six senior finals in the 1990s, Naomh Columba’s powers waned after the turn of the millennium and they slipped into the intermediate grade. But hopes are high around Pairc na nGael once more.
Last night, Glen overcame Naomh Colmcille 3-9 to 2-10 to book a place in the quarter-finals.
“We were looking for a good performance. It wasn’t there a lot of the time, but we came through,” Ward, one of the Glen goalscorer, said.
“We were hoping to focus on shot selection, but it didn’t really turn out that way. The wind was a bit of a problem, but we can work on that for next week.”
Ward admitted that he got a tad ‘lucky’ for his goal, which looped over the Naomh Colmcille goalkeeper Jason Quinn late in the first half.
With a berth in the last eight already secured, Ward says they should aim high.
He said: “We’ve been tipped as being there or thereabouts. This year, we really want to push at it. It’s about time we started pushing to win Championships.”
