Glengad United manager Shane Byrne admits that he feared the worst when Clonmany Shamrocks were given a late free kick in today’s clash at The Crua.
Byrne’s tackle seemed perfectly timed, but Harvey ruled otherwise and Paul McLaughlin’s free kick looked destined for the bottom corner – but Glengad ‘keeper Kevin McLaughlin superbly tipped the ball around the post.
Glengad boss Byrne thought that the Inishowen League’s entire pendulum was about to swing away from his men.
“It was never a free because it was a great tackle by Adam, but that’s the difficulty sometimes: It could have lost me the League, a bad decision by a referee,” the Glengad manager said.
“Decisions like that change Leagues. If we had only got a point, it changes the whole perspective.”
With Buncrana Hearts winning to put the pressure on three-in-a-row chasing Glengad, the victory was vital for the defending champions.
[adrotate group=”46″]Byrne said of McLaughlin’s save: “It was a great save and I was delighted to see him tip it around the post. The wall was set up and it came through a crowd of players. He saw it late, but what a save.”
Glengad can clinch the title with a win away to Aileach on May 3rd. Failing that, there’ll be a titanic final day showdown against Buncrana at The Crua.
