Seosamh MacCeallabhuí says there’s no such thing as ‘what’s another year’ as far as Red Hughs are concerned.
Indeed, the Red Hughs manager feels that time is running out for some of his team’s elder statesmen.
Last night, Red Hughs – beaten finalists in three Junior finals of late – defeated Moville to book a Junior semi-final berth.
“These boys have left too many championships behind them,” Mac Ceallabhuí said.
“We have a lot of 36 or 37 year-olds. Next year doesn’t count. They’ve been in three finals in four years and lost them.”
Ciaran Diver – who ended with 1-5 – scored a first-half goal as Moville led by a point at half-time. MacCeallabhuí says Diver is a player who should be on Declan Bonner’s radar.
Ryan Kelly’s early goal in the second half proved key as Red Hughs went half-an-hour without scoring.
Mac Ceallabhuí added: “The boys just got nervous. We missed a couple of gilt-edged chances that could have made life easier for us. We did say we’d be happy if we won by a point – and we won by two.”
