Donegal captain Michael Murphy has taken his first managerial job.
The Glenswilly star, Donegal’s All-Ireland winner skipper from 2012 – who has been Donegal senior captain since 2011 – was confirmed as the new manager of the Letterkenny Institute of Technology Gaelic football team.
“It’s something I want to move into at some stage,” Murphy said.
“It’s exciting to come into. I look forward to working with the GAA team here to try and push things forward in the area.
“It does have a funny ring to it, but I hope to bring the experience of a few managers I’ve had.”
LyIT will target success in the Trench Cup in the campaign ahead. Murphy succeeds Eamon O’Boyle as the team manager.
He said: “There is a hell of a lot of potential here. I know a lot of the players here from playing with them and against them.”
Commenting on the appointment, LyIT President Paul Hannigan said that he is delighted and he has ensured Michael all possible support in their challenge for college sporting honours.
He said: ‘Through the direction of the Student Services Office, Michael will have at his disposal support and assistance to pursue what we in LYIT see as the next step in GAA.”
“The added incentive of a range of Sports Scholarships available to incoming and returning students in LYIT is regarded as a huge help in ensuring that the best possible players will have the opportunity to commence their third level education in LYIT and also be part of the GAA sports programme, while also pursuing their chosen field of study.”
