Peter Doherty says Cockhill Celtic will quickly turn their attentions to going for a sixth Ulster Senior League title in a row.
After Sunday’s 1-0 win over Swilly Rovers, when Doherty headed home the only goal of the game, Cockhill were toasting the capture of another title, their fifth in succession and sixth in total.
“It was tight in the end but we got over the line,” said Doherty.
“The win was the main one, I wouldn’t worry about who scored it. It took the goal to ease the nerves. It was gung-ho until we got the goal and I felt that we were comfortable after that. It could have been a bogey game, but we did the job well.”
Cockhill have now done something that hasn’t been done since the great Fanad United team of the 1990s in winning five on the trot.
Doherty said: “It’s some feeling. It gets better every year. We’ll take a few weeks off and then go for six. It shows the real quality and commitment that we have. It says a lot for the set-up in the club, too, it’s really professional.”
