Gavin Cullen hailed a ‘massive three points’ as champions Cockhill Celtic overcame title foes Letterkenny Rovers to take a grip on the Four Lanterns Ulster Senior League race.
Malachy McDermott netted with seven minutes remaining on Easter Monday as Cockhill defeated the Cathedral town men.
“With the conditions, today was never going to be pretty with so much at stake and the teams evenly matched. I always felt it was going to be tight,” Cullen said.
Letterkenny goalkeeper Rory Kelly saved a penalty from Gerry Gill earlier in the game before McDermott stepped up with the winner.
Cullen’s men are in command, but he isn’t counting his chickens yet.
He said: “This season has been a funny one. There’s a long way to go at this point.
“We’re seven or eight players – important players – down. I’ve always talked about the squad. It has really helped our success and it’s being tested at the moment.”
