Gavin Cullen has called on his Cockhill Celtic players to ‘dig deep’ as the Ulster Senior League race enters a nervy last three games.
Five-in-a-row chasing Cockhill have uncharacteristically slipped up and let a big lead fade.
With three games remaining they have only three points to spare on Letterkenny Rovers, who won at the Charlie O’Donnell Sports Grounds on Sunday in a top-of-the-table clash.
Cockhill hadn’t lost a League game since 2012, but have been beaten four times since the turn of the year – including a defeat to Derry City that was overturned in the boardroom (a decision that is now the difference at the summit).
“I always said that it would go to the wire,” Cullen said.
“We have given them an opportunity, through our own poor results. We have three tough games to finish it out, but I hope the players dig deep and go again.
“We’re depending on the same players. Last season, for instance, until the last two games of the season, I didn’t start the same 11 once. I ain’t able to do that this season.”
Darren McElwaine’s brace sealed the win for Rovers on Sunday after Gerard McLaughlin gave Cockhill the lead.
Cullen said: “It was a nothing game until we scored. As soon as we got the goal, we stopped, we stood off and we were leggy. Letterkenny looked really hungry and pushed on for the win.
“We conceded terrible goals.”
