Eamonn McConigley says Letterkenny Rovers have to put the disappointment of Saturday evening’s USL League Cup final defeat behind them having been given another bite at the League title.
Rovers looked down and out of the USL race a few short weeks ago, but on Wednesday night at Dry Arch Park (7.30pm) they face Cockhill Celtic with the title up for grabs in a play-off.
“We were out of it, but we got a second life and we took it,” McConigley said.
“We’ll have a go again on Wednesday night.”
Rovers will welcome Ryan Lonergan and Chris Malseed back from holidays, but David Shovlin will sit out the game having been sent off in Saturday’s 3-1 Cup final loss to Cockhill in Buncrana.
All the goals came in the final 19 minutes. Laurence Toland, a substitute, turned the tide for Cockhill, but McConigley was left with a bitter taste in the manner of Toland’s opener and also disallowed Cillian Morrison effort in a frenetic finish.
McConigley said: “I felt whoever would get the first goal would go onto win it. We’re disappointed insofar as we felt it was a free and a yard offside as well.
“The referee and linesman missed it, but we have to take it on the chin. The sickening part is that it was a free out.
“We were still in it and the third goal was comical from us. But when we were 2-0 down, we had to go for a goal ourselves.
“you have to get the rub of the green. Cillian Morrison went in to challenge the size of Gavin Cullen…as far as I’m concerned he dropped it into the net.”
