Barney Lafferty hailed his ten man Ballybofey United as they defeated Cappry Rovers to reach an Area final in the Brian McCormick Cup.
Goalkeeper Chris Patton made two saves in a penalty shoot-out after a one-all draw.
Ronan McMenamin was sent off on 25 minutes for Ballybofey, who led 1-0 through Michael Lafferty’s early goal.
“We were always under a wee bit of pressure when we went a man down,” Lafferty said.
“They battled hard and that’s what got us through. It was a dogged game and a battling performance.
“Our boys put in a good, tight, hard performance to keep us in the game. We were happy to get it to penalties.
“It’s a good start to the season. We have 28 players signed and it’s good to get fellas another game. We wanted to stay in it for as long as we could.”
Ballybofey begin their Division 1 campaign on Sunday at home to Lagan Harps.
Lafferty said: “Yeah we’d be expecting to push for promotion. You have to say to the boys and say we’re going to go and try to win. We’re capable of doing it, bu we just have to go and do it on the day.”
