Retaining Dr Maguire is not something that has been achieved too often in the recent past – and Barry Doherty is aware of history’s lessons.
Kilcar embark on their defence of Donegal football’s top prize, which they won last year for the first time in 23 years, when they take on Killybegs in their opening group game.
St Eunan’s managed a three-in-a-row in 2007-08-09. Aodh Ruadh retained it, including the boardroom-awarded title of 1998, while Killybegs won back-to-back titles in 1995 and ’96.
“It’s difficult and history shows that it’s difficult,” Doherty says.
“It’s a challenge we’re looking forward to. This is the exciting part of the season.”
Doherty goes into the Championship without cruciate victim Patrick McBrearty, while Ryan McHugh will be absent for this game.
However, Doherty has warned that his men need to be well prepared for Sunday.
He said: “If we’re not ready, we’ll be found out. We’ve prepared well and we’re going in with the right attitude.
“We have expectations of the way we need to perform to win games.”
