Lifford-Strabane Athletic Club lie in an impressive fifth place after the first round of the National Indoor League, which was held in Athlone last weekend.
This is the first Indoor League outing for the club, fielding both a men and women’s team for the premier team competition indoors.
Both the men and womens teams are well positioned to qualify for the Final on the 6th February with the men lying fifth overall and the women 10th. Only six points separate the men from top Dublin outfit Clonliffe Harriers, and are only four points behind Donore Harriers who fielded European Indoor 1500m finalist John Travers over Saturday’s 800m distance.
The Lifford Strabane club has a mix of both youth and experience, with some of the club’s top juvenile and masters athletes involved. There were a number of strong performances all round, showing that the club’s athletes have the confidence and ability to compete at this level.
Saturdays events included the 60m, 60m Hurdles, 800m, Long Jump, Pole Vault and Shot Putt. In two weeks time, athletes will compete in the 200m, 400m, 1500m, High Jump and Triple Jump. With League Final places up for grabs, the Lifford Strabane men and womens teams will need to be at their strongest for Day 2 on the 30th January.
