THE DONEGAL LEAGUE’S Disciplinary Secretary, Terry Leyden, has slammed some clubs’ treatment of referees during the 2015/16 season.
On top of highlighting what he called a ‘lack of respect’ to referees from players, noting that two players were currently serving 12-month suspensions for incidents involving referees, Leyden also marked the card of the clubs.
The experienced official outlined the treatment that some referees had experienced.
“There have been some cases where we have heard that the water in the referee’s room has been turned off or where there is no hot water provided,” he said.
“That’s very childish if that is happening.”
Leyden voiced concerns about the facilties available at some clubs’ grounds, which are inadequate for officials.
He said: “There are still some clubs who have a serious problem with facilities.
“This is especially so in clubs where there is a toilet that is made available to everyone. That isn’t on.
“Some day, a referee will just turn up and say that he isn’t going to play a match at a place like that.
“They need a toilet and a shower – preferably one that works.”
During the season gone by, Leyden and his committee have also expressed their displeasure at critical comments made by players and club officials on social media – a practice, he says, they won’t tolerate going forward.
