Aidan Callaghan travelled to Nice, France to compete in the 2019 Ironman 70.3 World Championships which were held on Sunday.
Club notes:
Aidan qualified for the championships after his superb performance in the 2018 Dun Laoghaire Ironman 70.3 in which he finished 7th overall and winner of the M35-39 age category.
Aidan has had frustrating 2019 dealing with some injuries but he worked extremely hard in the lead up to this event and it paid off with a brilliant performance on Sunday.
As always Aidan had a very strong swim. Exiting the water in 27:07, Aidan went onto have an impressive bike split of 2:43:24- on what was a very challenging bike course.
The half marathon to finish took competitors through the historic Promenade des Anglais waterfront. Despite the very hot temperatures, Aidan had a brilliant run of 1:27:15 to complete the event in a total time of 4:44:04.
Speaking after the event, Aidan said the course was brutal and although disappointed with his run was happy to end his season with the result. Well done Aidan on another fantastic result.
Altan Adventure Race
Closer to home the Altan Adventure Race took place in Creeslough on Saturday. In the 72k Challenge event, 247 had three competitors taking part. Gavin Harris was the first member home in an impressive time of 4:15:18. Tom Murray returned to competitive action after his recent Ironman Copenhagen and performed well with an overall time of 4:43:12. Mary Harkin was the sole 247 female representative and crossed the finish line in a fantastic time of 4:53:08.
