Sarah Helly, winner of the 2015 Womens’ Amateur Close Championship, received a warm and appreciative welcome from Captain Gerard Duffy, President Ann Condon and Junior members of the club when she paid a visit to Letterkenny Golf Club on Tuesday.
Speaking to the enthralled audience present, Sarah described her win of the prestigious trophy played recently at Rosapenna Golf Club as “a dream come true”.
Sarah, from Enniscrone in County Sligo, has strong Donegal connections as her mother hails from Buncrana [Mc Daid] and double All-Star Gaelic footballer Paul Durcan is her first cousin.

A former girls international brought up on the pitch and putt course run by her parents a mile from the first tee at Enniscrone GC, Helly gave herself a 23rd birthday present to remember forever with pride with this huge win over one of Europe’s most in-form players, Olivia Mehaffey.
“The Close has always meant so much to me and it was a tournament I always wanted to win” said Sarah, who was accompanied to the club by Martina Rafferty, Sales & Marketing Manager of the Silver Tassie Hotel where Sarah was staying, and Sarah’s sister Joanna.
“I knew I was the underdog but I had nothing to lose and I was playing very well,” explained Sarah to the Junior girls of the club who proferred a question & answer session. Before sheleft the club for further visits around the peninsula, Sarah showed the “Close” trophy and also her International blazer which she was presented with to represent Ireland in the upcoming Home Internationals being played in RoyalWimbledon GC in September.
