His winning scorecard from Wednesday 30th Open showed steady, mature golf with dropped shots at par three 5th [Inishowen], 9th hole [Crievesmith] and 17th [Aughaninshin] for a three over gross 75 and 39pts to pip runners-up Enda O’Donnell and Kevin Hannigan, both on 37pts.
Saturday 2nd April Open was won by another member whose dedication is also paying dividends early in the season as Sam Hegarty [19] once again proved the old adage of ‘practice makes perfect’.
Having been stumped by a double bogey at Hackett’s Best [6th], Sam’s birdie reply at par three 8th [Greenhills] was instantly dismissed by another double bogey at Crievesmith [9th], before a more consistent back nine recorded 22pts for an overall winning score of 41pts to outpoint the ‘form’ golfer at the moment, Kevin Hannigan [7] by one.
Kevin’s start of bogey-birdie had him take the turn on an average 18pts but birdies at Settlement [11th] and 17th just wasn’t enough having faltered at Candalabra [15th] with another bogey to leave him on 40pts.
