Although there was relatively no competitive golf being played over the past week due to the atrocious weather conditions, Letterkenny Golf & Social Club kept it’s members busy.
The usual Wednesday night 25 card club and also, on Friday night, the club’s now revered annual winter quiz and ‘putt’.
Up and running once again under the tuition of renowned quizmaster par excellence Hugh Mc Clafferty, sixteen teams , played in four groups, are once again vying for the much sought after title ‘Brains of Barnhill’, that title being extended last year to the team of former club President Eamon O’ Carroll.

Each team is guaranteed at least three games and with two weeks gone already, all games so far have been very competitive with very close scoring. On the first night, Michael O Malley’s team beat MBH’s team [Michael Boucher-Hayes] with the help of some impressive ‘putting’ from new recruit Keith Spence. However, in their second game they came unstuck against the team led by the incoming captain Ivan Furey.
In the second week we had the reigning champions Eamonn O Carroll’s team in action, edging out Tom Mc Donagh’s team in a very close battle. In the second game on the night Greg Sullivan’s team had a narrow victory over a very strong Mark Doherty captained team which featured new recruit Jimmy O Donnell.
The victory was mainly due to the impressive putting of Greg’s new signing Tom Reddan who taught his compatriots a thing or two! Tomorrow, Friday night, will see newcomers Triona Daly’s team in action along with Lady Captain Margo Birmingham’s and Peter Muldoon’s teams and we anticipate another two close games. Call out for the craic—everyone invited!
Another fantastic night is on offer on Saturday night, 21st November as part of the club’s ongoing ‘Music Nights’ in association with Browns on the Green. This week we have the inimitable Mark Bradley Trio, one quarter Met Quartet and one fifth Jazz Gazette.
Mark has played trumpet and fluglehorn on the North West jazz scene for over twenty years and for this night of great entertainment, from swing through to bebop, he teams his smooth vocals and effortless instrumental phrasing with Michael Bradley (piano) and Peter Doherty (double bass).
Music starts at 9pm-11.30pm absolutely free.
It is only six weeks ’till Christmas–only six lotto jackpot draws left. The jackpot this week is standing at €3,700.
Don’t tell me that is not a nice little “earner” for Christmas?
