Wednesday 16th Open proved memorable for club member Conor Mc Gettigan [10] for not only did he win the competition with a fantastic two over gross 44pts, but his handicap was reduced to single figures!
With birdies recorded at Inishowen [par three 5th]and Sheep Hill [12th], Conor took the turn at one under gross while bogeys at 10th and Hunters Home [par three13th]had him level par thru fifteen holes, [38pts], only for back-to-back bogeys at Barnhill [16th] & Aughaninshin [17th] to ruin a lifetime card.
Runner-up on the day was the evergreen Anthony Delap [16] following his return from injury. With 24pts on outward nine, Anthony was also returning his ‘best ever’ but double bogeys at Settlement [11th] and 13th had him rue his lack of concentration.
One point behind in third place was the form player at the moment, Eugene O’ Donnell [13] returning 41pts to pip Seniors team stalwart Peter Dobson by virtue of B.O.T. Eugene’s ‘strange’ looking card read back-to-back birdies at Hall Door [1st] and 2nd holes, followed by bogeys at Swilly [3rd] and 4th holes.
Eugene then followed a birdie at 11th with a ‘blank’ at 12th, a birdie at par three 16th and finished in “tour’ style with an eagle three at Bridal Path [18th] Â for an inward return of 25pts.
Congratulations to Ronan Mc Clafferty [13] on winning the Friday 18th Open. With a birdie at 5th and a ‘blank’ at Greenhills [8th], Ronan’s 39pt total was enough to pip John Hession by one point while Saturday 19th Open was won by George Onofrie with 43pts.
Runner-up was Eddie Margey on B.O.T. with Paul Mc Guckin, both returning 41pts.
Sunday 20th confined competition was won by Brian Cullen [12] who recorded a fine 44pts. With birdies at 3rd and Ramsay’s Isle, [par five 7th], Brian turned the corner with a level par 24pts and, following another birdie at 12th, strolled down the Bridal Path with ease.
Runner-up was junior member Eoghan Harkin [17] who, recording 24pts on back nine, regretted his lapse of concentration on some of the front nine holes whilst returning 42pts.
Monday 21st Cat 4 outing, the final competition of the season, proved significant for two members of that category, Mark Murray and Aiden O’ Neill. Congratulations to Mark on winning the final outing from a field of twenty with 19pts over 9 holes, thus defeating runner-up Brian Hegarty by a single point, and to Aiden who celebrates winning the order of merit ‘Player of the Year’ title.
Congratulations to Kevin Kiely’s selected Seniors team who won the Donegal Seniors Pennant on Sunday last when defeating a strong Rosapenna GC team. Trailing 3 matches to two from the away leg, Letterkenny won the home leg with 3 matches and thirteen holes.
