Finally getting a break from the atrocious weather conditions of late, the club’s hearty members were out in force last weekend to play in the ‘turkey trot’ on Saturday 19th and the long anticipated Christmas Hamper on Sunday 20th.
Taking the feathered bird home on Saturday was Ulster Cup and Seniors’ team stalwart Peter Dobson [8] who, whilst playing in the worst of the day’s heavy showers and strong winds, returned a very credible level par 36pts. Despite double bogeys at 10th and 17th, Peter’s front nine of 19pts combined with a grandstand birdie finish at Bridle Path [18th] gave him the win.
Sunday’s Christmas Hamper, played in somewhat subdued, milder weather, was creditably won by the long hitting single figure handicapper Michael Collum [8]who, with back-to-back birdies at Glebe [2nd] and Swilly [3rd], took the turn with 20pts and consolidated the win with a ‘t.v.’ style eagle at 11th, playing a driver, eight [8] iron to pin high left and chipping in for three for a two point lead at the finish. In runner-up spot was cat 4 handicapper Michael Mc Daid [26] who, despite a ‘blank’ at 6th, played steady handicap golf for a return of 23pts on inward nine and an overall 39pts. Best gross on the day, finishing with a three under par in the last five holes due to birdies at Stack Yard [14th], Candalabra [15th] and 18th, was Don Ponsonby [5] with 34 gross pts.

The tee boxes which have been expanded are bedding-in well – helped by the Indian summer in October. Also, astroturf has been installed on a number of the winter tee boxes to minimise wear and tear.
Saturday night is music night at the club, the music being largely a combination of jazz, easy listening and special guests. The finest of vocalists and musicians in the North West area continue to appear and the programme for quarter one of 2016 is currently being compiled and all details appear on letterkennygolfclub.ie.
By way of a little glimpse, Gay McIntyre is booked for Saturday 2nd January, admission is free and the music runs from 9pm to 11.30pm. Restaurant and bar food is available beforehand if desired from the award-winning Browns Restaurant – bookings to Noreen on 087-299-9311. Definitely something members, family and friends should add to their New Year’s resolution list.
