LETTERKENNY EDUCATE TOGETHER NATIONAL SCHOOL opened its doors in 2006, but it was only in the 2014/15 school year that the school sports teams came into being.
The teams and the sports have gone from strength-to-strength since then.
The school, located at Ballyraine in Letterkenny, aims to ‘educate children in an all-inclusive environment, with respect for all, irrespective of gender, religion, physical ability, ethnic or social background’.
Today, Donegal senior football captain Michael Murphy was at the school to present a kit to the LETNS footballers (pictured above).
The school held a quiz in Arena 7 to raise the funds to buy the kit for the teams.
Arena 7 and Michael Murphy Sports & Leisure have given invaluable assistance to the school.
Teachers Nakita Burke and Lisa McMonagle rolled out the sports programme in the school and the initial focus was on athletics and soccer.
Last year, LETNS competed for the first time in the Letterkenny AC day for primary schools and also in the Primary School Sports at Finn Valley AC in Stranorlar.
This year again, LETNS will compete in the LAC event on April 22 and at Finn Valley on May 11.
Their soccer campaign began in 2014 with friendlies against Magherabeg and Moyle NS. They entered the FAIS 5-a-side Futsal competition, entering male and female teams.
Teams from third and fourth class entered the Finn Harps Schools Cup – and the school will again bid to win the Fran Fields Cup this year.
This year, the school went a step further with the introduction of Gaelic football and they reached the final of the C competition in the Letterkenny District League.
“This was a great achievement for the school, the boys and girls put in great effort and sport in the school has really taken off,” said Burke.
