LETTERKENNY Cricket Club won their first ever match in the North West Cricket Union League at the weekend.
The Letterkenny club played in the Derry Midweek League in 2019 and were admitted into the Long’s SuperValu League for 2020.
Due to the delayed start of the season because of the Covid-19 shutdown, the structures were rearranged. The Qualifying Leagues were split into five groups and Letterkenny are now in Group A with Coleraine 2, Ballyspallen 2, The Nedd and Maghera.
Letterkenny overcame Maghera by six wickets at Drummond, where the Donegal side are to be based for home games this season
Maghera, led by 21-run stands by Mathew Caulfied and Aaron Stewart, set a target of 68 runs in their 20 overs.
Letterkenny passed the target in 18.4 overs, reaching 71 for the fall of four wickets.
Rithvik hit 35 before he was caught off the bowl of Caulfield while Aneesh reached 18 not out, Fernandes and Sumit landed six each and Deepak Swain scored four.
St Johnston who, for many years now, have been Donegal’s sole representatives in the NWCU, lost out to Brigade at the weekend.
St Johnston could only manage 79 for 8 in their 28 overs with Michael Rankin (22) and Sabin (19) top scoring at Beechgrove.
Former St Johnston player Ryan Macbeth claimed four wickets, including that of his younger brother Scott.
Brigade had little trouble as they cruised to 80 for the loss of only two wickets. A 30 from David Barr and Ryan Hunter’s 29 set the senior cup winners on the road to victory,
