Several Letterkenny Athletic Club runners ran in the Streets of Galway 8K on Saturday evening. All had exceptionally good runs in what is one of the country’s most highly rated road races.
Club notes
In-form Conor Gallagher was 14th in a top-quality field in 26.28. Ann Marie McGlynn was up against some of Ireland’s leading female runners and emerged victorious in a time of 26.41.
Adrian Callaghan also had a good run and featured well in the M45 category in a time of 36.12. The overall winner was Damien Landers of Ennis Track Club in a very fast time of 24.07.
Raymond Birch was the first of the Letterkenny AC contingent in Tuesday evening’s St Mary’s GAA 5K in Convoy. Raymond’s time of 16.23 gave him 4th place overall and 2nd place in the M40 category.
Kevin Kelly’s good form continued and he clocked 17.38. Dessie Shiels also ran well and crossed the line in 18.36. Just 1 second behind was Barry Mackey, whose domination of M50 running in Donegal continued.
Barry was the category winner. That should set Barry up for Sunday’s National Masters’ Track and Field Championship in Tullamore. He will be running in both the M55 5000m and M55 1500m races.
Liam Ferry finished in 19.12 and Richard Raymond in 23.24. The race winner was Foyle Valley AC’s Chris McGuiness in 15.40.
Ciaran Doherty stormed to victory in Friday’s tough Ballyare 10K. Ciaran’s time was 33.52, which left him 24 seconds clear of 2nd placed Paddy Brennan of Finn Valley AC.
Ciaran McGonagle was 3rd overall and the winner of the M40 age group in 34.37. Sean McFadden’s time was 39.30. Dessie Shiels and Liam Ferry, running their 2nd race of the week, finished in 41.04 and 41.11 respectively. Mark Nee clocked 42.24, Aidan McGlynn 43.34 and Stephen Shiels 43.51.
Aidan McKenna had a fine run in Sunday’s Monaghan Ten Miler. His time was 1.06.16. Aidan was 16th in a highly competitive M40 group. The race winner was Shercock AC’s John Whelan in 55.17.
Anthony Farren was the leading LAC runner in Saturday morning’s Letterkenny Parkrun. He was the 1st M50 runner in 24.09. Dara Dunne also won her W50 category, in 24.28. The first runner home was Aidan O’Hagan, Acorns AC, in 17.27.
As part of the forthcoming Letterkenny Folk Festival, Letterkenny Athletic Club is organising a road relay race on Sunday August 25th. Athletic Clubs, running groups, work colleagues etc will have an opportunity to put teams together. The relay teams comprise 3 runners who race a 1500m leg each.
There are junior races and age category teams. The race is chip timed. Registration is from 10.00am at Charley’s Cafe, Pearse Road.
Race 1 (the juvenile race) starts at 10.45am and Race 2 (senior/masters’ race) starts at 11.00am. The entry fee is €25 for adult teams and €15 for juvenile teams. The start and finish is below Charley’s Cafe.
The route passes the Inver Fillling Station, turns right to Dunnes roundabout, passes the Radisson Hotel, on to McDonald’s and back into the carpark of Charley’s Cafe for the changeover/finish.
