Letterkenny 24/7’s Hugh Gallagher, Donagh O’Sullivan and George Rahmani travelled to Chicago, USA to compete on the international stage at the World Triathlon Championships.
Gallagher and O’Sullivan were to take on the challenge of the Olympic distance with a 1500m swim, 40km bike through the city and a 10km run to finish. Rahmani competed the Sprint distance which is half the distance of the Olympic.
In a weekend that was to be plagued my thunder storms and saw a number of the races changed to a duathlon, our athletes were happy to get through the full race in one piece. Gallagher finished his season on a high, biking and running himself into 56th place in his age group and an overall time of 2.12.43.
O’Sullivan will be delighted that all the hard work in the pool over the winter paid off with a good swim and finishing the race in a time of 2.16.41. George Rahmani completed the sprint distance in 1.26.24. Congratulations to all three triathletes flying our club flag on what must have been an experience of a lifetime.
Closer to home the club had two first age group medals in Belmullet, Co. Mayo at the weekend. The Blacksod Point Challenge is a favourite among many of the triathletes despite its challenging Olympic distance course.
It was going leave good memories for club members Clara Quigley and John Conaghan (pictured above) who took first place in their respective age groups. Clara completed her race in 2.49.53 and John, who has been consistent throughout the season, completed the distance in 2.28.07. These results will surely see both athletes finishing high up in the National Series Rankings.
The evenings are beginning to close in so the club training schedules will change. Check out the club website wwwletterkenny247.com or our Facebook page.
